I am a senior Consultant in Endocrinology and Diabetes and have been practising at Spire Bristol Hospital since 1997. I have a very busy clinical life as a specialist Endocrinologist and Diabetologist both at Spire Bristol Hospital and Southmead Hospital, where I care for people with a wide range of problems including pituitary, adrenal, thyroid and parathyroid disease, as well as diabetes (both Type 1 and Type 2) and obesity. I lead a joint parathyroid, thyroid and endocrine clinic at Southmead Hospital with Mr Justin Morgan, the endocrine surgeon. I also have a specialist interest in the care of women with thyroid and endocrine disorders and diabetes pre, during and post pregnancy and run the antenatal medical clinic at Southmead Hospital, North Bristol NHS Trust. I am totally committed to delivering personalised and high quality care to all my patients, ensuring they fully understand their condition and what treatment (or self-management) will achieve. I comprehensively inform patients about their condition, about the treatment or support options available, and about the benefits and risks of each option. Together we arrive at a treatment and management plan based on a mutual understanding of this information. Sally, my wife, helps me deliver this level of care and is always available at the end of the telephone to sort out any worries or concerns a patient may have. She arranges and helps plan investigations for patients where necessary. She ensures patients are kept well informed about their results. My academic research into education for people with type 1 diabetes (funded by a Diabetes UK grant) was awarded the Education Prize in 2006 at the European Diabetes Association meeting. This work resulted in the ‘Skills for Life’ education programme for people with Type 1 diabetes which has been commissioned across Bristol, S Glos and N Somerset. I work closely with pharmaceutical companies with my team of 3 specialist nurses undertaking research into new insulins, new medications and new treatment approaches fo
